By using virtual reality (VR) techniques during the planning stage of a project, VR enhances team thought processes, saves on cost overruns and time, and provides a 3D virtual tour of any project.

The laboratory developed a computer generated, real-time, 3-D virtual air traffic control tower environment to be used in experiments and simulations conducted at the Research Development & Human Factors Laboratory. The controller's view from the tower can be dynamically panned and tilted to give a full 360 degree scene, or it can automatically track a flying aircraft. Observers can also fly anywhere in the virtual environment. A small window displaying with a view tethered to a flying plane can be turned on and off. Another window displays an airport view can also be turned on and off. Fog intensity in the airport environment can be dynamically controlled.
