Virtual
Reality techniques were used to design, visualize and evaluate the proposed
new design of the FAA Pacific Operations Control Center (POCC). The laboratory
built 3-D virtual prototypes of several proposed designs using different
consoles and other pieces of furniture. Several complete virtual OCCs were
developed each being different in their configuration. Evaluators were able
to navigate anywhere in the control centers to examine the consoles and their
layout from any vantage point. This approach enabled evaluators to quickly
and inexpensively design, visualize and evaluate many different designs in
a cost effective and timely manner.
