By using virtual reality (VR)
techniques during the planning stage of a project, VR enhances team thought
processes, saves on cost overruns and time, and
provides a 3D virtual tour of any project.
The
laboratory developed a computer generated, real-time, 3-D model detailing the
Boston TRACON and all associated Air Traffic Control canopy equipment, external
equipment and workrooms. The laboratory
then conducted analysis regarding the physical placement of the new Standard
Terminal Automation System (STARS) consoles in the canopies and the associated
maintenance areas required.
Computer animation was used to show console clearances through hallways
and doors. Equipment “before” and
“after” states can be highlighted.
